Turning Quiz Results Into What to Reteach, Not Just Who to Flag


Most grading happens one paper at a time: mark this one wrong, note the score, move to the next. That catches who got a question wrong, but it doesn't surface the shared misunderstanding sitting underneath several different wrong answers, because grading in isolation never puts them side by side.

A score tells you who struggled. It doesn't tell you why, and the why is the only part that tells you what to actually reteach.

Ten wrong answers aren't ten problems. They're usually one misconception, said ten different ways.

Why grading one at a time hides the pattern

Marking papers in sequence means each wrong answer gets judged against the right answer, not against the other wrong answers. A shared misconception spread across a dozen students in a dozen different phrasings looks like a dozen separate mistakes when you're reading them one at a time.

Before: grade each response individually, note who got it wrong, move to reteaching based on which students struggled.

After: paste a batch of responses into Claude, ask it to group the incorrect ones into shared misconceptions, and reteach the actual gap instead of repeating the original explanation to individual students.


A process for finding the shared misconception

    Collect a real batch of responses, not a handful

    Pull answers from the full group, not just the ones that stood out while grading. A partial sample skews toward whichever responses you happened to read most carefully.

    Ask for misconceptions grouped by theme, not a list of wrong answers

    Request the incorrect responses grouped into the underlying misunderstanding each one reflects, not a simple right-or-wrong tally. That grouping is the actual diagnostic.

    Ask for a representative answer per misconception

    A real quoted answer grounds each misconception in something concrete, and it's useful later for explaining to the group what went wrong without singling anyone out.

    Plan the reteach around the misconception, not the topic again

    Once you know the actual gap, address that specifically rather than repeating the original explanation. If the misconception was about cause and effect, reteach that distinction directly.

When the misconception is really a wording problem

Sometimes what looks like a content misconception is actually a question that was ambiguous, and several students answered a slightly different question than the one you meant to ask. That's worth distinguishing before you spend a reteach session on content that was never actually misunderstood.

Tip

Ask Claude whether a misconception could instead be explained by the question being ambiguous or open to more than one reasonable reading. Reteaching content doesn't fix a question that needs to be reworded.
